2009 MotoGP Race Report: Andrea Dovizioso won at Donington Park

Andrea Dovizioso won at Donington Park

This year’s British Grand Prix was a surprise and, luckily, not one related to the weather. Andrea Dovizioso won his first MotoGP first place and it was followed by Colin Edwards and Randy de Puniet. How’s that for the Donington Park podium?

Buell Firebolt XB12R

Get the Flash Player to see the videos.
The Buell Firebolt is a model which with refinement, versatility and innovation has managed to attract the motorcycle press on its side and still carries on big time. The 2009 model year is even greater, like the superbike that every single rider could jump one and feel well at home. At least that was the idea when creating it and we reckon that the bike doesn’t come as a disappointment for anyone. Or does it?

Troy Corser and Nick Heidfeld swap BMWs and hit the Nürburgring track

Troy Corser left his S1000RR Superbike in favor of Nick Heidfeld’s F1 car, for a test run on the Nürburgring track. The swap was found interesting by both BMW pilots, but we understand that Corser had a 500bhp advantage, which is nothing to be neglected.

Although the BMW Sauber F1 car puts down 700bhp and the BMW S1000RR Superbike disposes of 200bhp, the bike is still the one catching the most of our attention simply because Superbike racing is much more spectacular than F1 racing.

See the video and what the pilots have to say about this interesting swap after the break.

With the 2009 RXV 4.5 – 5.5, Aprilia proves that development never stops as the world of racing is a continuous inspiration for road legal motorcycles such as the two reviewed today. Featuring an even lighter chassis than the previous model year, an upgraded V-Twin motor and new design, the RXVs are some of the most highly acclaimed off-road motorcycles of this year.

Yamaha’s newly patented turbo-diesel engine to be developed

Yamaha’s newly patented turbo-diesel engine to be developed

This patent drawing indicates that Yamaha is planning to develop an inline-four intercooled and turbocharged diesel engine. Furthermore, various technological solutions have made the subject of the patent application filled by the company’s officials.

The intercooler will be located above the engine or concealed in the frame and a turbocharger will be mounted adjacent to the cylinder head, protecting the parts, ensuring a compact design, but, most of all, minimizing turbo lag.

What makes this news even greater is the fact that Yamaha plans to develop turbo-diesel powerplants even for entry-level sports bikes such as the FZ6 drawing that we’re looking at, while the R1 and R6 can only dream of a modern oil burner and the implicit better fuel consumption.

Aprilia has come a long way with the Pegaso 650 and we’re now witnessing the presence of more than one such model in their lineup. The Factory and Trail are two similar and yet very different models. Although featuring the same engine and chassis, one fits in the supermotard category and the other in the enduro one. This really shows the Italian manufacturer’s talent in transforming a bike depending on the requests of riders, but also how versatile the Pegaso 650 actually is.

Rocking Motorcycle by Felix Götze

Rocking Motorcycle by Felix Götze

If all the kids that grew up to become motorcyclists had a rocking metal horse in their early years of life, at least parents would know where they did “wrong”.

This rocking motorcycle was built by Felix Götze, who used parts from old german motorbikes. This makes the thing reliable and, together with the resistant frame, it is sure to put a smile on many generations of little faces in one happy family. The first in line is Otto Komei, a three-year-old who enjoys watching the neighbors working on their bikes. Sitting on this rocking motorcycle, at least he’ll feel connected to their activity until he is old enough to join the club and finally let mom and dad realize what they encouraged him to do.

The seat is an old style unit and looks highly resistant to…diaper content (is it true that they don’t wear those after two years or so?). Also, the headlight and instruments have been properly sealed so that the inevitable drool won’t mess things up when the lucky kid admires the pinstripe from German airbrush-artist Thomas Weber.

The rocking bike was built in educational purposes as well. “Powered” by a single-cylinder, two-stroke engine with 150 cc, it teaches the little fellow to start with small steps in life.

Although you might laugh, this motorcycle crash video (caught by the security camera) isn’t entirely funny. It shows a man riding his Ducati Monster and apparently attempting to perform a stoppie. His attempt is unsuccessful and he ends up smashing into not so bone-friendly security gates.

We feel sorry for his idiocy and hope he didn’t suffer sever injury!

Aprilia SXV 4.5 - 5.5

Get the Flash Player to see the videos.

Aprilia came across a unique recipe for the enduro/supermoto world, one that enables their riders to rule the trails as well as the supermoto competitions in the same time. The big secret is the 450/550cc V-twin motor found on the RXV models and on the much more interesting and versatile SXV ones that now got our attention.

Although the transformation from an off-road bike into a super motard is rather facile, Aprilia went the whole way and created completely new rides in order to dominate the tracks. Furthermore, the SXV 2008 VDB Replica comes as a purely competition motorcycle born from the need to deliver the very best of engine performance and chassis refinement, the results being even elbow scratching 90-degree turns.

Aprilia RS 50

Get the Flash Player to see the videos.

In a world where 50cc two-wheeled vehicles are called mopeds, the Aprilia RS 50 manages to stand out as a supersport model with all the features that come with the category.

The two-stroke engine’s 8.4 horsepower would mean the difference between a stock and an aftermarket exhaust in the case of most liter bikes, but when you start thinking that Aprilia took the time to develop an aluminum frame and swingarm, light wheels and an RSV-inspired fairing for the RS 50, you know that they’re up to something big (and not necessarily in terms of engine displacement) here.

Although it might seem like it’s designed for pure fun, the smallest supersport bike from Italy is here to teach kids and teenagers the first steps in sports riding. And when the engine starts feeling week, an 80cc cylinder kit will keep riders on their first RS bike before even considering the RS 125 alternative.

Tower Bridge backflip by Robbie Maddison

Tower Bridge backflip by Robbie Maddison

Robbie Maddison came up with a very spectacular way to promote the upcoming Battersea Power Station round of Red Bull X-Fighters scheduled to take place on August 22 in London. The daredevil performed a no-handed backflip between the two open sections of Tower Bridge spanning the Thames in London at a speed of 40 mph.

Although the stunt took place early this morning, all the elements were on Maddison’s side and he managed to land smoothly.

Very communicative, the stuntman shared a few impressions with the press: "People say I’m crazy, but I just want to push the boundaries of my sport and my body to the limit and I love taking on these huge challenges," said Maddison. "It was an incredible feeling to fly between the two towers and over the Thames".
