When it comes to riding motorcycles, safety is always an issue of paramount importance. Unlike cars that have an enclosed body, motorcycles don’t have that luxury so, in the event that you crash - or s----out of control - well, let’s just say that you’re on your own.

Helmet maker, Reevu, may finally have the technology to give bikers the helmet of the future thanks to the development of the MSX1, a revolutionary helmet that comes with a rearview mirror. Similar to how a rearview mirror in the car works, the MSX1 has a mirror located right above a rider’s line of sight. It works as an adjustable tunnel mirror that has a little collapsed periscope on the back of the helmet that allows riders to see exactly what’s happening behind them.

It may not go in the way of completely preventing motorcycle accidents from occurring - that would take complete abstinence - but it does go a long way in improving road awareness among riders out there on the streets.

Ever wondered how a Buick motorcycle would look? Well, Marc Senger has conceptualized such a machine and it probably qualifies as one of the smoothest seen so far. Called the Buick Bombrunner, the concept takes us back in to the good old days when a V8 motor was just the right thing to power everything around, but it also gets a fancy hubless front wheel. Too bad everything is masked by the car-like body shell.

Overall, the Buick Bombrunner is an all-American concept motorcycle, but it stands no chance considering today’s requirements. Still, we like it.

"Ferrari of electric bikes" or a modern Flinstone vehicle? [w/video]

What looks to be a slightly more complex approach towards the classic idea of a mountain bike actually ends up being claimed the "Ferrari of electric bikes" . Yes, this is the M55 Bike EVO-001, an electric bike that simply cannot pass unnoticed by those interested in this particular segment of electric vehicles.

Based in Hungary, M55 have developed the bike for the past three years and after five prototypes, they’re taking it to the production line. Built around a one-piece molded aluminium frame, the M55 Bike EVO-001 doesn’t seem to bring anything new on the market, but it is actually its integrated battery pack and a centrally mounted motor that make a difference.

Recently gunned down in his Puerto Rico native, 22-year-old David Morales Colón benefits of a very unusual wake on his Honda CBR600 F4 Repsol edition. Wearing casual clothing and sun glasses, the embalmed dead man looks like he’s worming up for a ride on his bike.

The same funeral home that made this happen is also responsible for another young shooting victim that was displayed standing up during the wake a couple of years back. What next? See the video after the jump.

1984 Hildebrand & Wolfmüller motorcycle auctioned for $131k

This Hildebrand & Wolfmüller is the world’s first-ever patented motorcycle and it recently sold at auction for $131,200. Made in Germany, the motorrad is powered by a 1488cc four-stroke twin engine developing an impressive for the time 2.5 hp at 240rpm. Weighing around 132 pounds and reaching a top speed of approximately 31 mph, this was the time’s only and best mechanical horse around. And it showed german ingenuity. For instance, the water needed for cooling the engine was held in the rear fender, while the transmission system is similar to that of a locomotive.

If someone had taken a look at KTM’s RC8 superbike and tried to build one in his own garage couldn’t have done a better job than the one done by Ian McElroy when, inspiring from the Austrian firm’s race-spec bike, has turned a 1987 Honda CBR 1000F into the nasty looking thing pictured above.

The custom bike features angular lines and aluminum hand-crafted fenders as well as a new subframe. In fact, welded sheets of aluminum form the bodywork, while the original 998cc, DOHC 16 valve inline-four was given a tune up using K&N filters and a custom-made exhaust system allowing the engine to breath much better and develop 130 horsepower. That’s worth of the Veypor gauges, which even records G-force, 0-60, quarter mile time and lap time apart from rpm and speed.

It is enough to take a look at the bike to realize that it required a great deal of work and dedication and the fact that it transmits that makes it even nicer. If we could only hear it go down the street…

There’s also the 2010 CBR600RR C-ABS model, so at least they had it all figured out before starting to splash the new paint on this supersport motorcycle.

2012 Izh Hybrid motorcycle concept by Igor Chak [w/video]

The latest creation of 26-year-old designer Igor Chak is the hybrid motorcycle concept called the Izh-1. Inspired from the 1929 Soviet Izh–1, the 2012 bike retains nothing but a few styling cues from the original russian bike as the designer has considered an 849.40 ccm (51.83 cubic inches) V-twin engine, modern looks and all the possible gadgets for it.

Half built from heat resistant and highly reinforced plastic, the 140 hp engine should be light and even feature built in wiring and circuitry. The classic engine, which has a fuel-regulating system for better fuel economy, can be mated either to a six-speed manual or an automatic transmission. Electronics would control the throtle system, clutch and brakes.

What makes this a hybird is the additional 60kw electric motor found in the rear wheel. This one is fed from a Lithium Sulfide Battery and gets a two-speed speed gearbox.

Probably the most interesting thing about this concept is the fact that it features a dual airbag, one to protect the rider and keep it on the bike and the second, mounted just above the front wheel, should take about 50% of the force of impact and also keep that rear wheel on the ground while doing so.

The bike would work in three different modes – sport, comfort and manual – and be fitted with traction control, ABS as well as a proximity regulating radar system front facing on-board camera helping riders maintain a safe distance from vehicles ahead if these happen to brake suddenly.

Apart from featuring a GPS navigation system, the Izh-1 is compatible to iPhone, Windows, Blackberry, Symbian, Android etc so that riders would stay connected all through their journey.

Track day gone wrong: anatomy of a highside

We just came across an interesting post on the triumph675 forum about the anatomy of a highside described by the author of the crash himself. Apparently, the rider was trying a new approach for Turn 9 of the Chuckwalla Valley Raceway and the tricky section of the track combined with a bit of dust turned disastrous for the Suzuki SV650, while the rider walked away with nothing but a hurt pride.

The bike, which was recently fitted with new bodywork and paint, is now $3K away from another track day. Better luck next time!

Oberdan Bezzi looks keen on the Bimota Moto Morini union that he started with the MMB1 sketch as we’re now looking at his second rendering in this concern. Called MMB2 FighterMotard, the bike seems to combine the streetfighter and hypermotard styles in a way that looks just right.

A simple look at the bike made up by the two Italian brands is enough to spot Granpasso influences, but the low and aggressive stance definitely makes it a streetfighter.

The bike should address to a much larger crowd than that of enduro riders as it would most likely do well in the city, good off the asphalt and excellent down the twisties.

Design guru Oberdan Bezzi has thought at a rather strange, but definitely interesting way to create a whole new V-twin powered Italian motorcycle. Called MMB1, the bike would come as the result of joined forces between Moto Morini and Bimota. The strange part is that MM would have to supply the engine on a bike to be sold with the Bimota name and logo on, but the thing does look plausible.

Our advice: don’t take it to seriously. Moto Morini was recently saved from bankruptcy by Paolo Berlusconi, so this is just Obiboi trying to guess where the company is heading now.

In a world where 50cc two-wheeled vehicles are called mopeds, the Aprilia RS 50 manages to stand out as a supersport model with all the features that come with the category.

The two-stroke engine’s 8.4 horsepower would mean the difference between a stock and an aftermarket exhaust in the case of most liter bikes, but when you start thinking that Aprilia took the time to develop an aluminum frame and swingarm, light wheels and an RSV-inspired fairing for the RS 50, you know that they’re up to something big (and not necessarily in terms of engine displacement) here.

Although it might seem like it’s designed for pure fun, the smallest supersport bike from Italy is here to teach kids and teenagers the first steps in sports riding. And when the engine starts feeling week, an 80cc cylinder kit will keep riders on their first RS bike before even considering the RS 125 alternative.

Not long ago, Aprilia decided to enlarge their success area from supermoto (SXV) and enduro (RXV) to motocross with the MXV 4.5 model. Don’t be fooled by the bike’s similar looks as Aprilia spent a lot of time modifying the platform in order to prove efficient for motocross riding. The frame and fuel tank suffered radical changes, while the engine has been worked on from airbox to exhaust.

Harley-Davidson XR124 is bad to the bone

Harley-Davidson is a little too much into their style, so they rarely come up with a bike that is truly bad to the bone. But most of their ideas are taken one step further by people such as Mike Wilson of Dyno Mike’s Dynamic Chassis and Sandy Kosman of Kosman Specialties, who have teamed up to build what they call the Harley-Davidson XR124.

They’ve taken Harley’s sportiest ride, the XR1200 and made it look, sound and feel more appealing for the younger crowd, while still retaining the bike’s original style. In other words, they’ve mounted an S&S 124 cubic inch Evo engine on a twin shock rubber mount frame with a Buell XB12 front end (meaning upside down fork, front fender and six-piston caliper). The aluminum tank and rear fender were ordered from Evan Wilcox.

These guys aren’t just bike assemblers, so they’ve built their own exhaust and wheels. Overall, the thing weighs less than 500 pounds, which should make it flickable, while the power-to-weight ratio should make things at least very interesting.

As with most successful tuner projects, this bike looks like it was actually made like this by the manufacturer, but we can only wish H-D would build such a bike.

Russian modified scooter does well on snow

If you liked yesterday’s Russian idea for a snowmobile, you’ll definitely like the Russian modified scooter too. It may look more or less like a toy war machine from the early 1900s, but it is in fact a daily commuter for someone who can never get enough oil on his hands and snow in his boots.

Details on the snow scooter are scarce, but it looks practical and as long as it puts a smile on the owner’s face there’s not much more you can ask from it. I wonder if a nice Russian girl actually rides this think…makes me wanna pack up and go see for myself.

The 2010 Kawasaki Z1000 is already one of the best Japanese nakeds around, but ways to make it better are always found either by riders individually or by tuners. These lasts have the habit of developing entire upgrade kits that set the bike miles away from its original state of new product that has just come out the factory gates.

Take the 2010 Roaring Toyz Kawasaki Z1000 case for example. The bike gets a set of Performance Machine wheels (17-inch front, 18-inch rear), 240-section rear tire, a custom-built braced swingarm and Brocks 4-2-1 exhaust, just to mention some of its most impressive new features.

The gold/silver paintjob does help at setting the bike apart from its standard siblings, but what we like the most about this project is the fact that it looks like that’s just the way Kawi did it in the first place. This is really one of those bikes that people see and ask “what is stock and what is aftermarket about it?” Click past the break to find out.

Ducati ‘1026' Flying Tigers edition by DSC

Inspired by the shark face nose art of World War II’s Flying Tigers, the three fighter squadrons of US volunteers that flew for the Chinese Air Force, Death Spray Custom in London have created what they like to call the Bite project.

This Ducati 996, which was most likely upgraded with a Fast By Ferracci 1026 Stroker Kit and now called ‘1096’, is the project’s pièce de résistance. Obviously, the paintjob is the coolest thing about it.

Ducati may not have thought at a “shark edition” for none of their superbikes, but DSC’s work could stand as a good source of inspiration if the idea ever strikes.

The designer claims that the grown organic materials used for the frame, suspensions and even the steering components are lighter and stronger than classic ones, making the Organic Bike a very special chopper to park on your lawn in the future.

Robbie Maddison jumps over Corinth Canal in Greece, sets new world record

Australian freestyle motocross celebrity Robbie “Maddo” Maddison has just established a new world record after bringing his Honda 500 dirt bike up to 77 mph and successfully jumping over the Corinth Canal, which has a width of 279 feet. Take a look at this gorgeous Ducati Streetfighter S! It was modified by performance parts distributor Motovation Accessories using mostly Rizoma parts and accessories found in their 2010 catalog. The bike showcases the quality products from rear sets to engine covers and features a custom paintjob applied by Southern Metal Customs in Austin, Texas.

Although this is not a radical project, we happen to like it a lot for looking a hell lot more aggressive than the stock Streetfighter S and much more expensive as well. Hit the jump to see the whole list of parts thrown at it.

Nobody would want to see an “Altered Rat” unless it’s the Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R special owned by Brian Johnson, who is a big fan of the rat bike style. The bike was done in the Altered Chrome Garage using the company’s own parts and it is the only one of its kind that we’ve seen so far.

We have to admit that this is truly an original idea and, in the end, what’s not to like about a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

This thing is like a rolling advert for junkyards, but don’t be fooled in thinking it’s a piece of crap. Imagine seeing this thing pass next to you doing 150mph.

Leslie Porterfield, who was recently declared the world’s fastest female motorcyclist by Guinness, has just been introduced to the BMW S1000RR, not to ride the 193 bhp German superbike full throttle, but for a classy picture gallery by Markus Hofmann, one of Germany’s best photographers.

Hofmann, who has in the past made other similar photos with various models on the same bike and in the same aircraft hangar, seems to have reached to the conclusion that fashionable Leslie Porterfield is the most appropriate person to photograph on his apparently favorite superbike.

The artist started from the fact that ‘There are so many motorcycle manufacturers that combine motorcycles and women in an artless and sleazy way, that I thought there just had to be a better way of doing it’ and mentions: ‘I had no intention of putting a naked woman on a bike, and it was very clear to me that the bike had to be the S1000RR superbike in the same colour that people have seen on the racetrack in 2009. I didn’t want the bike to fade into the background either – showing the name of the manufacturer was also very important for me, because it made the feeling of a pit stop and racetrack environment much more authentic.’

Looks to us like the world’s fastest woman on two wheels makes 2010’s best superbike look faster and classier!

Until recent years, Aprilia has been producing the Mana 850 as an entirely naked bike, but the Italian manufacturer also entered the sport-touring category with the Mana 850 GT ABS. At its base, the bike remains the same all-rounder with nothing more than a half-fairing and an adjustable windscreen, but it is claimed to be the result of a completely new concept of motorcycle and that definitely raises a few question marks.

We just got across a video that made a question pop up in our minds: are snowmobiles more fun than dirt bikes? They must be if ridden by the craziest guys in Iceland, just as this video reveals. It shows two guys worming up their sleds into a local reservoir and then deciding to climb onto the extremely steep concrete walls, the first up the side of a 30-foot cliff and the second goes for a mind-blowing 70-foot one. You’ll need a breath of fresh air after seeing this and start looking at snowmobiles as to gravity-defying machines. I guess this does make them better than dirt bikes.

Spanish actor Antonio Banderas officially presented yesterday in Madrid his Moto2 team called Jack&Jones by Antonio Banderas, which will compete in the Moto2 World Championship.

The 49-year-old Hollywood star is no stranger to motorcycles as he bought his first motorcycle more than 30 years ago and can now brag about a decent collection involving all types of motorcycles from touring to dirt ones.

Banderas about his passion for motorcycles and racing: “I am a motorcycle lover, and I’ve been a big fan in recent years. This gave me the opportunity to compete on the inside and I didn’t have to think about it!”

For the 2010 World Championship, which will debut this weekend in Qatar, Banderas hired riders Kenny Noyes and Joan Olivé and says: “I want to be involved with the team where the riders, both Joan and Kenny, have everything they need to compete at the highest level.”

Aprilia initially thought at the RSV4 R superbike as to an affordable version of the RSV4 Factory and ended up calling it “the world’s most exclusive motorcycle.” While we cannot agree with the Italian motorcycle manufacturer in that matter as their Factory model is obviously the uncompromising and much more expensive motorcycle (which is precisely what makes it exclusive), we do like the fact that performance figures haven’t been reduced and they still managed to offer it for a $16K price tag.

Take a look at the world’s cleanest dirt bike! How does that sound anyway? But it’s true; the thing is called the Zero X and it is the only trail bike in the 2010 Zero Motorcycles product lineup. Derived from the 2010 Zero MX, the X gets 23 electric horses and 50 ft-lbs of torque, which is more than ok considering the 161 pounds curb weight.

Like its motocross sibling, the Zero X comes in two versions, the X Sport and X Extreme, the difference between the two being made by engine grunt and different suspension. Hit the jump for more details.

Suzuki GT550 café racer looks the best

The café racer style may not have started on Japanese bikes, but it does help turn some of these into absolutely gorgeous machines. For example, this 1975 Suzuki GT550 (I know, it looks brand new) is probably the coolest café racer approach on a classic Japanese bike.

Thomas Leeming from Montana recently finished building it and he doesn’t forget to mention some of the changes he has done: "pipes by Omar’s. Electronic ignition. Battery, oil tank and electrics are hidden under the seat cowl."

What we like the most about the Suzuki GT550 cafe racer is the racy and yet classy look given by the bike’s stance and the multitude of shiny bits and parts. More pics after the jump.

Harley-Davidson XR1200 Café Racer by Adrenalin Moto

Take a look at what the guys over at Adrenalin Moto in the UK did to a Harley-Davidson XR1200. It looks neat and fast to us and, if you can believe it, this is actually a café racer. Harleys are probably the last bikes you’d want to modify in such a way, but the XR1200 model loves being fitted with parts such as the Ducati 900SS fairing, projector headlight, carbon fiber side panels and a high level two-into-one stainless steel exhaust system, just to mention a few.

While overall weight is reduced with no less than 83.8 lbs, the XR1200 Café Racer gets a paintjob replica of Cal Rayborn’s XR750TT racebike. The only thing we don’t like as much about it is the fairing, which kind of makes the bike look dated. Most likely a bikini fairing would have looked better, but I guess they needed wind protection.

Clearly, those brits can transform any motorcycle into a café racer. Sadly, this one is not for sale.

Zero MX

Time has come for green dirt bike riding and, why not, racing with the 2010 Zero MX, the world’s first electric motocross ride. Zero Motorcycles also plan on maintaining it on its “most advanced electric dirt bike” position, so for this year they’ve upgraded virtually everything they could: powertrain, suspension, looks.

Furthermore, two versions are available, the Zero MX Sport and the Zero MX Extreme. With more power and stiffer suspension, this last version is the closest thing to a racing electric dirt bike that money can buy. It rewards you with 50 ft-lbs, 23 horsepower and only weighs 172 pounds, so it’s more or less like a mountain bike on steroids.

1976 Honda Gold Wing GL1000 turned into café racer

You can spend a lot of money on a custom bike designed and built to suit your taste and still feel like the thing isn’t even yours? Maybe it is because you haven’t put your blood, sweat and tears into it. Take this case for instance. This 1976 Honda Gold Wing GL1000 powered by a gold four-cylinder engine was found on eBay and after being bought and given a magic touch, it has turned into a veritable café racer.

A simple look at it is enough to suspect this bike required some serious modifications, but we’ll have to say that a black and gold paint job, new tail section and fairing as well as new exhaust pipes do the trick in this case. The rest is just what makes the bike feel like belonging to a rider – all the time and energy put into it.

So, was it all worth it? Well, the thing is now Bike of the Month, March 2010 over at Naked Goldwings, so you decide.

Aprilia Tuareg rendering reveals possible BMW GS rival

Italian motorcycle magazine Motociclismo has just revealed a sketch that they’ve put together as a result of rumors about Aprilia planning to launch a big-bore adventure tourer. Called the Aprilia Tuareg, the motorcycle would be a 1200cc adventure-sports one, which positions it up against BMW’s recently disputed king, the R1200GS and rivals Yamaha XT1200Z Super Ténéré and Ducati Multistrada.

With that being taken into consideration, Aprilia would really have to get the most out of the 1200cc V-twin engine suppose to power their future desert bike, while also keeping it under the 200kg (440lbs) weight limit imposed by the desire for competitiveness.

As this rendering reveals, the dual-purpose bike will come with a 21-inch front wheel, while a street version featuring a 19-inch one isn’t out of the equation either.
