Triumph America

Get the Flash Player to see the videos.

Sometimes it isn’t recommended to go ahead and buy the first motorcycle that looks perfect to fulfill your riding needs even though your every single cell tells you to do so simply because there can always be an even more adequate alternative. That’s why we have the competition heading in all of our reviews, but in this case that’s not going to be the solution.

Now, we’ve just wrote about the latest Triumph Speedmaster and that custom bike couldn’t have left you a bad impression, but people may want to go for the classic bike, and that’s where the 2010 Triumph America intervenes. So if you haven’t already made a deposit for the Speedmaster, the America can blink an eye at you as it is more comfortable without losing any of the British magic look.

The Japanese helmet manufacturer Marushin has recently presented the 2010 edition of their calendar, which features Italian model Barbara Cipolloni in foreground.

Like in the case of the previous edition, the pictures are signed by Italian photographer Luca Bracali. The calendar is available on the Marushin website in PDF format.

The Italian division of the Japanese brand has also published the 2010 Marushin Catalog (also in PDF), which presents closely the entire collection of protection helmets composed of 16 models.

Marushin helmets stand out thanks to original graphics, but also for being declared safe by the British Sharp program.

Get the Flash Player to see the videos.

The much-awaited and anticipated Yamaha XT1200Z Super Ténéré finally broke loose with the goal of tipping the adventure-touring king, the BMW R1200GS, off its throne and we must say the all-new Japanese bike has all the credentials to make that possible. To begin with, there’s a great demand for big-bore adventure sports bikes in general and, with the right ergonomics, powerplant and innovative features, for the all-new Super Ténéré in particular.

Update: Yamaha has just released the accessories list and pics, which you can now find in our article and picture gallery. Remember, the parts are standard on the 2010 model year, which makes this kind of a limited edition bike as the 2011 one will have them too, but only in the accessories catalog.

Moto Guzzi V11 streetfighter by GHEZZI-BRIAN

The Moto Guzzi V11 was originally built as a veritable naked with café racer styling cues, but GHEZZI – BRIAN has recently presented the streetfighter version of the Italian bike and we totally dig it. This is actually a demo bike for the Furia Replica kit that stands behind the striking transformation, but the upgrades go way further than what meets the eye as the kit includes new pistons, rods, camshaft and exhaust pipes, all bringing the Italian V-twin to a more than decent 100bhp.

The Furia Replica kit is easy to fit on any Moto Guzzi V11, but at $5,442 (€4,000), you really have to like it in order to buy it and for those expecting more details, check out the list of parts that compose the kit after the jump.

According to these sketches, Italian designer Oberdan Bezzi seems to like the Vyrus 987 C3 4V a lot, but finds the bike a little too…naked and has come up with two faired versions of the ingenious original package. The Vyrus Superbike is supposed to be the competition version as it doesn’t have lights or mirrors and it’s rather hard not to spot the slick tires as you check out the hub-center steering chassis design, which is kept on both bikes. The street version is called “Yellow Fever” and it does feature all the necessary for street homologation as well as road tires.

Rollersphere, the helmet you ride into

Rollersphere, the helmet you ride into

Bulgarian designer Krasimir Emilov Aseno has come up with a different kind of helmet. His concept is supposed to comfortably accommodate the rider inside and be handled by joystick. Power will come from several electric motors fed both by an accumulator battery and by a solar energy system which collects outside power thanks to a folio of solar sensitive cells. Ingenious, huh?

The best part about this concept is that it doesn’t roll you over as it goes down the street, but has what the designer calls a “speed track system” consisting in many treads covered in elastic, flexible, and strong material in order to make movement possible. Also, driving-belts can be used.

The joystick handling system is a gyroscopic one that determines the vehicle to bend left or right depending on the direction indicated by the rider.

Needing to be strong and yet very light, the Rollersphere will be made out of materials such as carbon or titanium and it will even have shock absorbers as it is designed for huge jumps too. Sounds crazy to me!

Is this supposed to turn into the world’s safest ride if it’s ever made?

Custom: Triumph Thunderbird Café Racer

Triumph Thunderbird Café Racer

Café racing passionate Sivert Raask from Sweden has recently presented his latest work, the Triumph Thunderbird 1600 Café Racer, which he seriously modified using parts from his own rear-sets and accessories shop, Raask. The bike gets a Ducati 900 tank, home-made seat as well as new exhausts and bikini fairing.

You can imagine where the rearsets and new speedometer have come from, but this actually looks like a great achievement considering that the Triumph Thunderbird isn’t a naked bike, but a veritable cruiser, meaning a long way from being turned into a café racer. Yet this one is and a very nice one too.

Raask bought the motorcycle new in August and transformed it over the winter. This is by far the first café racer he built and we reckon it won’t be the last either. Just read what the man has to say about his passion for café racers:

“Café racers have always been my favourite bikes. Back in 1967 I bought a boat ticket from Gothenburg to London, bought a used Norton Atlas, then brought it home and rebuilt it as a café racer.I did the same with a Commando.”

“More recently I’ve built café racer versions of the latest Bonneville and Rocket III so when I first saw the new Thunderbird I immediately thought it would be perfect to make into a café racer.”

And he did, right before Christmas, but we hear it wasn’t test ridden yet, so we should find out more about it after the Triumph Thunderbird Café Racer starts doing what it knows best.

Triumph is aware of the fact that it just isn’t enough to be part of the world’s motorcycle history so they reinvent themselves creating and then carrying on manufacturing unique motorcycles such as the Speed Triple. If some of those models end up determining the creation of other ones, which is definitely the case here, it means there’s great demand in that sector and it is also very likely for that first bike to stick around for more action. The 2010 Triumph Speed Triple does so and with not many changes to set it apart from the previous model year. So let’s see what Triumph is betting it will sell their bike.

Red Bull’s latest idea of extreme riding recently turned into fact with Speedway rider Jarek Hampel riding onto the Spodek, Sport and Event Building roof on his Jawa competition motorcycle. Triumph Tiger/Special Edition

Triumph makes sure their most versatile model, the Tiger remains a strong player on the market and the presence of a Special Edition model in their lineup is just what the doctor recommends for riders in search of an adventure-sport model. The bike is based on the Tiger ABS, but distinguishes thanks to a Matt Graphite and Matt Black color scheme as well as thanks to a pair of color-matched sidebags, just like the 2010 Sprint ST gets.

A first glance at the standard 2010 Triumph Tiger is enough to make you think the bike is totally new, but what actually sets it apart from the previous model year are the attractive new color schemes and the touring upgrades that the Brits simply had to have for their wild model.

While the color schemes as well as the accessories are for you to decide, what they don’t offer the possibility to decide for is the 1050cc three-cylinder engine producing 111 bhp at 9,400 rpm and 72 ft.lbs at 6250 rpm, as that would actually be the main reason why people buy the bike. Also, the Triumph Tiger features sports suspensions and rubber as well as Nissin brakes, making it an adequate sport-touring bike rather than the dual-purpose one that first made an entry back in the early 1990s.

This Honda CB750 café racer was created by Japanese custom builder Whitehouse together with Japanese retailer Motorimoda and it is actually called CB750 Café Type Motorimoda. What first meets the eye is the 1970s racing styling achieved with the use of modern materials such as carbon fiber, from which several parts have been made. These, together with the aluminum gas tank lighten this custom CB750 with 33 lbs (15 kg).

Underneath the aerodynamic fairing sits an original carbureted, air-cooled, four-cylinder engine that delivers 20hp more than the original production version after being tuned and getting a new exhaust.

So, with less weight, more power and much better looks, this café racer qualifies for the very special price of $29,290.

Magnetic powered front-wheel drive concept bike

When it comes to the future’s green bikes, the main trend seems to be towards electric power, comfort and practicability. While this concept bike designed by Nicholas Holland is anything but comfortable or practical, it does shine in the alternative energy chapter as the whole brilliancy of it spins around the idea of having an intense magnetic field (which is highly energy efficient as it reduces friction) produced by the giant loop passing through the front wheel. Apart from spinning the wheel and setting the bike in motion, the magnetic field also rotates the axis when steering.

Considering that it was designed as an urban commuting vehicle, this concept bike looks a bit too complicated, but as long as it makes everyone look like Batman’s sidekicks it’s ok with us.

Electric Scooter Concept by Happy Design

You know what the problem with the motorcycle page on TopSpeed is? Not enough talk about scooters. We recently came across an interesting scooter concept from the Italian chaps at Happy Design and thought at it as a good way to even up the scale between superfast, uncomfortable, gas burning supersports and relaxed commuting, green scooters.

Although there’s very little information about this concept, we know that it is supposed to be an electric scooter, a very fast one considering the way it looks. With a futuristic front end, smooth flowing lines and very small wheels, it meets the Happy Design theme and could make a lot of European commuters truly happy if someone ever decides to turn it into fact.

1960s Ducati Scrambler

At a first glance, this might look like a custom-made Scrambler with the Ducati name on it, but it is in fact a motorcycle that the Italian maker’s Borgo Panigale factory did delivered back in between the late 1960s and until the mid 1970s, when the US market was avid for this type of motorcycles and Ducati had the racing frame and lively engines of different capacity: 250, 350 and 450ccs.

Although this particular one is slightly modified, we like it even more as, at least visually, it is brought up to date and can still ride the dust like in the good old days. If I’d be a Ducati head, I’d seriously think about reviving the Scrambler and have it compete with the Triumph Scrambler, which still goes strong today.

The bike looks gorgeous with the dark blue/yellow color scheme, but this is one of those cases when the “more than meets the eye” part is what really makes all the difference.

This thing is powered by a big bore 1258cc inline-four engine breathing out through a hand made exhaust system and developing a decent 110bhp. While bringing in a new clutch and suspension, Moriwaki also fitted their latest idea for a Kawi Zephyr with a computer designed, aluminum alloy swingarm in order to stiffen up the rear end as well as make possible the use of a 180 section rear wheel and tire.

HD Nightrain custom pays tribute to Johnny Cash

Harley-Davidson enthusiast and Johnny Cash fan Julian Grindall commissioned Shaw Speed and Custom Shop to build him what he calls the “Get Rhythm” motorcycle, which is actually a tribute to Johnny Cash.

Talking about his inspiration source, Grindall said: "For me & the creation of a Johnny Cash tribute bike was quiet simple, the love of motorcycles especially Harley-Davidson and the music of an iconic performer & song writer."

Dubbed the Johnny Cash bike, this custom is based on a 2004 Harley-Davidson Nightrain and it features a multitude of PM parts such as the wheels, Phatail kit and controls, just to mention a few. It also received an RSD Vintage seat and gas tank after being significantly lowered in a successful attempt to make it look sleeker.

The custom paintjob was signed by Image Design and although black is the dominating color this is surely one bike that won’t pass unnoticed, but we just can’t see what makes it a tribute to Johnny Cash apart from “the title of the bike “Get Rhythm” was an obvious choice. This great song of Johnnies describing the rhythm of the shoe shine boy betting the blues and the rhythm of the Harley V twin, perfect.”

You can read more about the bike here, so we’ll focus on what you’re really interested, the hot chick next to the green track blast. Andreea is a 20-year-old model studying in Prague, Czech. She does seem passionate about motorcycles, but they all do when the photographers get into action. Making this combination successful are the proportions of both characters involved. As announced, Fiat Yamaha team has today taken the wraps off the 2010 MotoGP bikes at Sepang before the first official tests of the new racing season. Looking at the new liveries, we have to admit there isn’t anything to make our jaws drop, but nothing wrong either…apart from the ‘stuck in 2009’ part.

Racing riders Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo were there and posed with their pit crews before taking the action to the actual track. More pictures after the jump.

So let’s see what the fuss behind this model is all about.

Superbike undressed: BMW R1000RS by Oberdan Bezzi

BMW R1000RS by Oberdan Bezzi

Ever since BMW launched their all-new S1000RR superbike we started hoping for a naked version of it and now that design guru Oberdan Bezzi created the BMW R1000RS streetfighter, chances are the Bavarian giant will consider this a great opportunity to enlarge their sport motorcycle lineup. At least that is what we hope for because from the very first glance, this undressed S1000RR looks like a nightmare for the Ducati Streetfighter, not as much in terms of style as we have to admit the Italian designer did draw inspiration from the Streetfighter, but in terms of performance.

We’ve already seen how great of a stunt bike the BMW S1000RR is in the right hands, so imagine its R1000RS naked brother.

190bhp trike, the closest thing to a Batmobile?

190bhp trike, the closest thing to a Batmobile?

What you see here is the unique idea of Polish firm Marotti about a trike. They’ve created and tested this prototype model powered by a 750cc Honda motorcycle engine and recently announced they will start production of what’s very possible to become the world’s fastest production three-wheeler. That is all due to the 397bhp/ tone power to weight ratio as the trike’s production powerplant is expected to be an 187bhp 1.4-litre engine and the whole thing will weigh only 440kg (970 lbs).

To us, this is as close to a Batmobile as we’ll ever get (hopefully), meaning that the jet-fighter inspired styling does its job properly.

Kawasaki produced and sold the Ninja250R for 20 years before considering an upgrade and getting at work to develop a brand new model, the one that was launched a couple of yeast ago and which started a complete frenzy especially among beginning riders. Soon turning into Kawi’s best selling sport bike, the Ninja 250R carries on as a 2010 model year with virtually nothing changed on it, so the only rightful question related to it is: “Will it be the same 20 years from now?”

Pit Boss, the motorcycle concept for wiseguys

Pit Boss, the motorcycle concept for wiseguys

The guys at Custom Eyes Concepts have come up with a rather unique motorcycle concept, but not at all implausible. In fact, the Pit Boss, as it is called, actually looks a bit old and that is mainly due to design inspirations from the cars back in the 1950s. More precisely, show off cars such as the ones you would have seen being driven by the early Vegas "wiseguy" aka casino pit manager aka pit boss. And that’s where the name comes from.

CEC claims that “mixing those themes with modern design concepts results in a true embodiment of the emotion and stature evoked by the real pitboss, in this one-of-a-kind custom motorcycle design.” More pictures after the jump.

Mustang motorcycles revived!

Mustang motorcycles revived!

The original Mustang motorcycles were built in Glendale, Calif., from 1947 to 1965 and were extremely fun, small bikes powered either by a 320cc side-valve single or a 122cc Villier’s 2-stroke, while the transmission was usually a 3-speed Burman. During the almost 20 years of production, approximately 20,000 Mustangs were built, making these quite popular things to ride back in the day.

Nowadays, California Scooter Company is reviving the original Mustang motorcycles at their Seidner’s Pomona, Calif., facility, where they have prepared an aluminum 149cc 4-stroke single-cylinder engine for the retro bikes. These will have a 27-inch seat height, measure only 6 feet in length and weigh 240 pounds wet.

The company actually plans to build three models, the Classic, Greaser and Babydoll as well as a variety of Customs, all based on the original recipe, meaning that California riders with a taste for retro motorcycles will be back on 12-inch wheels soon. Starting at $4,995, these things are no toys if that’s what you were thinking.

Victory Vegas Limited Edition

Victory Vegas Limited Edition

At a first glance, this motorcycle appears to be no more than a 2010 Victory Vegas available in Fire Ball Red, Competition Yellow, Pearl White or Turbo Silver and featuring a side-mounted 106 race plate graphic, color-matched frame and swingarm and blacked-out forks and drivetrain, but it is in fact Victory’s new Vegas Limited Edition model, which they also happen to claim being their “quickest motorcycle ever produced”.

The technical solution making that claim possible consists in Stage 2 cams being fitted to the 106-cubic inch V-twin motor now developing 97 horsepower and 113 pound-feet of torque.

Victory only plans to produce 100 of these bikes in 2010 and they will come with a $15,999 price tag. Orders are being taken until February 15, so if you want one, then you better hurry up. Click past the break for the official press release.

Getting in contact with a candidate for the “Ultimate Superbike” title can be a mind blowing experience, especially if you’re suppose to ride the hell out of the thing, but the 2010 Kawasaki Ninja ZX-14 adds a little more to that feel. It’s all about the imposing dimensions and the constant thought of knowing that underneath you grumbles this manufacturer’s biggest and most evolved motor to be mounted on a superbike-type motorcycle.
