Yamaha reveals first full picture of 2010 FZ8

After teasing us with pictures showing only the noses of both the 2010 FZ8 and FZ8 Fazer models and the motorcycle press getting their hands on more than just a few leaked pictures yesterday, Yamaha has decided to release a single full picture of the all-new FZ8.

Looking at it, it’s easy to see that the model supposed to replace the FZ6 is actually derived from this last’s bigger brother, the FZ1. Considering that the 1000cc bike produces 150hp, the new middleweight one should brag about around 120hp. We can only be certain of that this summer, when Yamaha will unveil the naked FZ8 and the half-faired Fazer 800.

Triumph Street Triple R, the better version

Triumph Street Triple R, the better version

When you’re not satisfied with what a motorcycle company is selling to you, but you’re such a big fan and cannot head in the opposite direction, you start taking things into your own hands and out of your pockets. This is exactly what Tony Hartfield did when noticing that the Triumph Street Triple R isn’t quite the performance machine he was expecting when he bought it. So he then headed towards a new 2009 Triumph Daytona 675 (Street Triple R’s original source of inspiration) and built his own idea of a high-performance naked.

Tony retained the 126bhp Daytona 675 motor, which has around 20hp more than the Street Triple, but modified the Daytona chassis in order to fit it with Speed Triple handlebars as well as with Street Triple indicators and headlights. Other upgrades include Giles rear sets, Pazzo levers and Galfer wavey discs front and rear.

Having completed the project, Tony told MCN: "I reckon what I have is what the Triple R should have been." And he may very well be right.

Is this Volkswagen's future superbike?

Is this Volkswagens future superbike?

BMW are already producing the S1000RR superbike, so why wouldn’t Volkswagen have their own? VW holds quota of Suzuki, so speculating about another German superbike seems now closer to reality then ever before.

The unofficial project belongs to German designer Nils Poschwatta, who has in the past worked for Volkswagen, but it is still in the “what if” faze as there are some impediments. First and foremost, there’s a great contradiction between the name Volkswagen and a two-wheeled vehicle which is everything but "wagen". Secondly, VW will most likely limit itself to investing in the Suzuki division and not in the launching of an all-new vehicle for them in a segment in which tradition has a strong word and big brands dominate the scene.

Still, the idea remains very interesting, especially as the project wears the R fingerprint, the new sports division launched by VW.

In the past, the German car manufacturer was suspected of planning a motorcycle together with the Austrians from KTM&sa.x=0&sa.y=0&sa=Go&sitesearch=www.topspeed.com&domains=www.topspeed.com&client=pub-4875171553795813&forid=1&channel=6192344904&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&safe=active&flav=0000&sig=mM_iRu_fGe4ShbE-&cof=GALT%3A%230066CC%3BGL%3A1%3BDIV%3A%23FFFFFF%3BVLC%3A336633%3BAH%3Acenter%3BBGC%3AFFFFFF%3BLBGC%3AFF9900%3BALC%3A0066CC%3BLC%3A0066CC%3BT%3A000000%3BGFNT%3A666666%3BGIMP%3A666666%3BFORID%3A11&hl=en">KTM, but nothing turned into fact. Kawasaki found itself in the situation of needing to seriously improve what has in the past few years become one very notorious high-performance touring motorcycle, the Concours 14. So while the bike doesn’t drift away from its ZX-14 DNA, it should offer a much safer, more economical and comfortable riding experience.

Harley-Davidson Forty-Eight

Harley-Davidson has today revealed their latest “all-new” motorcycle that they add to the 2010 Sportster 1200 lineup, the Forty-Eight. While the bike gets the consecrated H-D air-cooled Evolution 1200 engine and five-speed transmission, Sportster fans will most likely be attracted by the radical new stylistic approach, meaning low profile custom handlebar with under-mounted mirrors, a shorty-style front mudguard and a cut-down rear one, both being wrapped around 16” fat, 150-section tires. The solo seat is positioned at only 26 inches from the ground and we also like the fact that the ’48 features a multitude of blacked-out components. Starting at $10,499 in black, the latest Sportster 1200 qualifies as an entry-level H-D with high-end finishing touches. Also, there’s an abundance of options, including a pillion seat kit, but find out more in the press release after the jump.

Aprilia RSV4 & Klara go straight to the heart

You really can’t compare a woman’s beauty with that of a motorcycle, but when we saw the pictures of the Aprilia RSV4 and Klara, we thought it’s at least worth giving it a try. The first has a strong heart of 180 beats at 12,500 rpm, it was born in 2009 and benefits of no less than 115 Nm of torque. The second measures 83-60-90, 5.7ft and it is 19 years old.

Yes, that’s an awful comparison indeed, but we’re happy to see we cannot say the same thing about these pictures showing both “characters” together. Enjoy!

Rediscovered vintage steam motorcycle for the railroads

Rediscovered vintage steam motorcycle for the railroads

This vintage steam motorcycle prototype was built in 1836 by English railway engineers George Stephenson (father) and Robert Stephenson (son), who also built the Rocket locomotive. To us, it looks greater than many concept bikes we see today, but it seems it was a little too much for times in which the forms of self transportation consisted in either walking or riding a horse.

After being discovered in an old abandoned workshop in the north of England, the steam prototype meant to be originally ridden on railroads is now called the Rocket Bike.

P.S. Is it just me or this thing looks a little too similar to the Triumph Rocket III?

Kawasaki now offers the KX250F motocross model as a 2010 model year. Not only that, but the quarter-liter racer is entirely new as a result of engineers aiming towards a higher revving and implicit more powerful, but also more reliable engine. Once you’ve done that, every single piece of the machine qualifies for a proper revision and that’s how dirt bikes end up being tweaked each and every year.

Dario Caroselli's Ducati Desmo concept

Dario Carosellis Ducati Desmo concept

The latest creation of italian designer Dario Caroselli is called the Ducati Desmo and it is, obviously, a supersport motorcycle designed following the strict requirements that end up turning these things into “two-wheeled Ferraris”.

While there is little hope that Ducati considers adding another liter bike for their already vast supersport lineup and this could ever turn into the actual one, Caroselli has even thought at three different color schemes that could be used. Looking at the details, you can easily spot the consecrated L-twin Ducati engine configuration, which in this case attracts our attention for being positioned right in the middle for better mass centralization.

We cannot say this is not a plausible and great looking concept, but we’re simply having serious doubts that it will ever find a better place than our desktop backgrounds.

Honda Unicorn Sports Concept makes bikers look funky

Honda Unicorn Sports Concept makes bikers look funky

Very often, those who plan to start riding can already imagine themselves dressed in bad boy leathers and so on, but you really need an appropriate bike to fulfill that dream and a bell should ring when hearing about the Unicorn concept that Honda has recently unveiled at the Auto Expo 2010 in India.

Although we would imagine something…different when reading the fancy name, the Honda Unicorn Sports Concept is anything but disappointing for the average rider in India. This should be thrilled by the 150cc engine, exciting new front cowl, stunning rear tail lamp, attractive tank shrouds, rear disc brake, spilit grab rail and dual tone styling, which are just few of the exciting features. These will most likely be found on the production version as well.

Hmm, so I guess we can say the 2010 Honda Unicorn will be a rider’s shortest trip from bad boy to funky.

Electric Bike Prototype for the snow

Electric Bike Prototype for the snow

Electric motorcycles are becoming more and more popular and builders are continuously trying to expand their coverage area on the market. One very good such example is the Quantya electric snow bike prototype, which is based on a Quantya MX bike but features a snowmobile-like track and a front ski so that it would turn into a fairly easy and fun bike to ride on the show. The only problem is that the batteries tend to run out too fast because of the cold, so different battery and motor power combinations are being considered and tested at the Quantya HQ in Switzerland. Once they figure this last detail out, don’t be surprised if the company starts producing the thing for snow enthusiasts.

Yamaha monocycle concept, a glimpse into the future of supersport rides

Concept products usually have two purposes: they’re either used by manufacturers to test the public’s reaction regarding their future developments or help skilful designers make a name for themselves. But very rarely, manufacturers turn to innovative designers with the proposal of transforming a great idea into reality.

This is precisely what we’re wishing Yamaha will do in this case as Japanese designer Yuji Fujimura is definitely up to something with his Wheel Rider concept. Virtually a fully-faired monocycle with a cockpit for a roof, this thing can become the ideal supersport ride for every speed enthusiast as long as it can go fast and somehow prove efficiency.

Bimota DB8

Bimota DB8

MCN has got the exclusive story on the new Bimota DB8 and so we managed to find that despite rumors regarding the great possibility for the Italian firm to launch a Ducati Streetfighter/Aprilia Tuono competitor, meaning a dual-seat, 1200cc entry-level naked, the new bike will actually be a veritable superbike that offers the possibility to take your wife or girlfriend along for the ride, as Bimota spokesman Anna Carla Cuneo says: “Bimota customers are used to being surprised with new and innovative motorcycles offering unique design, good power and light weight – and many of them also have a wife or girlfriend that would like to come along. We are sure this design will be a big success.”

Bimota hopes to sell 250 such motorcycles for $33,057 (€23,000) while still producing their DB7 model, which starts at $37,369 (€26,000). It may sound like much for the average superbike buyer, but it is what Bimota considers ‘entry level’, so I guess we weren’t too far off after all.

Built around the same consecrate oval section CroMo hybrid chassis now linked to a aluminum subframe and featuring also Marocchi and Extreme Tech suspension front and rear, it is easy to see how building costs have been reduced, but we should also mention that the DB7’s carbon fiber fairing has been replaced with a cheaper, plastic one.

At least we’re satisfied by the fact that engineers made no concession in the engine department. As a result, the 1198 testastretta evoluzione, 4v twin cylinder 90° develops no less than 170 HP at 9.750 rpm and 131.4 Nm at 8.000 rpm. That’s even more impressive in relation to the 392.4 lbs (178 kg) weight of the bike. This means even more engine performance that the Bimota DB7 for less money. I believe we’re starting to understand the whole affordability thing. Read the full specs after the jump.

Ducati 599 Mono concept bike - Italian looks meet Supermoto power

Ducati 599 Mono concept bike - Italian looks meet Supermoto power

This eye-catching concept bike called the Ducati 599 Mono is the latest creation of Dan Anderson, the same man behind the Voltra electric concept that blinked an eye to the motorcycle press last year.

While its creator doesn’t have bad references at all, we can’t say we’re too ashamed of the way this thing looks…perfect, that is. You can spend hours trying to find something wrong with the aggressive design, which remains faithful to the original Ducati style, but once you start getting into details, something just doesn’t fit. More precisely, the 352lbs (dry) Ducati 599 Mono concept is powered by one half of a Ducati Evoluzione 1198 engine, meaning a 599cc single-cylinder thumper.

So why would anyone want to do that? My guess is that the designer thought at sacrificing horsepower over torque so that his concept would attract attention for eventually being capable to offer supermoto-like engine performance despite the Italian supersport lines. How does this combination sound to you?

Triumph Thruxton café racer by Pure Triumph

Triumph Thruxton café racer by Pure Triumph

Take a look at what started life as a 2009 Triumph Thruxton and you, as us, will most likely come to the conclusion that almost all British bikes can be transformed into café racers as long as someone is willing to pay the buck. This unique bike right here was built by Pure Triumph and it features all the possible changes and aftermarket parts that a demanding rider could wish for. To begin with, we’re talking about upside down 50mm Showa forks and competition spec Bitabo multi adjustable shocks, which together with the 17-inch wheels (please note the 180 section of the rear tire) make sure the bike is able to go very fast around corners, just like a café racer should. Also, twin four-pot Tokico calipers and radial master cylinder won’t have a rider hope for the best during emergency braking.

As you may have noticed, the frame remains the same and it is the other chassis parts that upgrade the overall product. Same thing with the engine: the internals remain unchanged, while the thing now gets an independent fuel-injection system.

Stylistically, an alloy T140 tank, an Alcantara leather seat and a ‘68 style rear section make every café racer fan crave for such a therapist, but we’re sad to announce that this precise one recently sold out. Yet, the Triumph dealer doesn’t stop here and plans an even better version.

It is not that we don’t like the way it looks, but it is miles away from being comfortable or at least forgiving.

Built by RK Concepts of Austin, Texas, the RK Racer is powered by a Buell 1200 V-twin engine and you have to like the way the 27-degree rake and those 23-inch tires make it look, but with the gas and oil tanks made out of glass, it sounds suicidal to ride. The bike has undergone a rather unusual transformation for the supersport category and we can now call it a veritable naked as the full fairing was entirely removed and the top custom motorcycle builder brought in a 2006 Honda Hornet 600 headlight and cowl, while the clip-on handlebars are now replaced by wide, flat ones. It’s good that at least Sands kept the Fireblade’s original fuel tank, seat and rear section, although the standard number plate holder has been removed.

As you can see, this is not the kind of project you invest a lot of money in, but it has to have its fair share of performance parts and accessories, so a Vance and Hines CS One full exhaust system, and Performance Machine wheels, brake calipers, levers and crash bobbins do the trick just fine.

Tuned for charity, the Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade streetfighter only needed the magic finishing touch of the custom satin gold/yellow paintjob in order to blink an eye to the enthusiastic future owner.

House of Thunder sells the world's most expensive motorcycle

House of Thunder sells the worlds most expensive motorcycle

House of Thunder is a German custom motorcycle builder that brags to have built the world’s most expensive motorcycle. In fact, the bike is a customized Harley-Davidson Rocker, which sells together with a 45metre transoceanic yacht built by Sunrise Yachts. The package also includes a rescue-boat and two jet skis if that’s a relief when you’re a billionaire willing to spend 22.66 million U.S. dollars on toys.

The Harley-Davidson Rocker turned into the most expensive motorcycle ever features a cleaned-up frame, hand-fashioned fenders and fuel tank as well as foldable handlebar to ease entrance in the garage on the boat. The paintjob matches that of the boat.

Eric Vauth of House of Thunder: “We still will build our normal custom bikes for our customers, but this is a completely new market and we always welcome new impulses for markets yet unexplored.”

Motorcycle riding techniques for ice and snow

Mad Stu is a Medical Despatch Rider who has developed his own techniques for riding his BMW K1100 LT motorcycle on ice and snow during the winter. He has the kindness to share his experience with us in the attached video. He apparently uses the same tires as during the summer and he only lowers the pressure inside them for more grip.

If you’re not needed to ride on snow and ice, well don’t, but if you do this video will sure prove helpful.

The word is out that in 2010 Mavizen could join TTXGP with their TTX02 electric motorcycle unveiled at the SEMA show in Las Vegas and with the bike’s RC8 chassis and approximately 100 hp Agni 95 electric motors, the team should stand a chance against the stiffer and stiffer competition. The 130 mph electric supersport motorcycle’s low speed battery management system was recently tested, so we got our hands on the detailed pictures and video made there. Enjoy!

Ridiculous Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R chopper

Ridiculous Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R chopper

Kawasaki has never ever thought at manufacturing a Ninja chopper, but it seems that this owner has taken measures by itself and came up with the bad idea for a chopper. I guess I never really considered how ridiculous a ZX-6R with longer forks and sidestand can look.

But looking at the bright side, it is now much easier to pull out a wheelie; all you really have to do is try to get moving.
